For two years middle-aged couple Tom and Amy Bates have been struggling to cope with their altered lives since their beloved undergraduate daughter Pattie was severely injured in a hit-and-run accident. Pattie, unable to walk and seemingly unable to communicate beyond making unintelligible sounds, is completely dependent upon them.

But their lives are dramatically changed by the arrival of a mysterious, yet apparently polite and friendly young stranger, Martin.

But who is Martin? And what does he want?

This clever, challenging and controversial play was originally written for television in 1976 for the BBC’s Play for Today series, however it remained untransmitted until 1987. In the meantime, Potter rewrote it for the stage and the play premiered in 1977 at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre. In 1982 a film version was made with Sting playing the role of Martin.

Pump House Theatre Company presents:

The Beauty Queen of Leenane

This wickedly amusing and thrillingly dramatic play tells the story of Maureen, a plain and lonely middle-aged spinster who lives with her elderly mother Mag. Maureen's sisters have flown the nest, escaping the drab family home, but Maureen remains at home, trapped in an acutely dysfunctional relationship with her mother.

When the arrival of an invitation sparks hopes of a last chance romance and the longed-for prospect of escape, things start to look up for Maureen - but not if her interfering manipulative mother has anything to do with it....

The twists and turns, the dark undertones and laugh-out loud moments, of this perfectly plotted drama have deservedly placed this play among the classics of modern theatre.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane rocketed its playwright Martin McDonagh to fame when it opened  in the West End in 1996, winning a nomination for Best Play at the Olivier Awards with the subsequent Broadway production winning four Tony awards. Since then, McDonagh has been as well known for his movies as for his plays with In Bruges earning him an Oscar nomination and Seven Psychopaths garnering critical acclaim in 2012. Most recently his play Hangman won Best Play at this year's Olivier Awards following its runs at the Royal Court and in the West End.

Rickmansworth Players presents:

Merrily we roll along

Merrily We Roll Along is an exciting show not often done on the amateur circuit because it’s a real challenge. The characters have to play themselves over twenty years with the main characters starting in their forties when friendships have disintegrated, compromises have been made and their values worn away, and moving backwards towards an idealism that bound them in their twenties. It is a strong storyline and fantastically witty lyrics. The show really has something in it for everyone, whether you are young and starting out in life, have been through your own tragedies or triumphs or are going through them now. With hits made famous by Frank Sinatra (Good Thing Going) and Carly Simon (Not a Day Goes By), it is considered one of Sondheim’s most accessible musicals, and we are lucky to have a chance to bring it to the stage.

Written by Bernard Shaw

Mrs Warren’s Profession

Vivie Warren, a young Cambridge graduate is horrified to learn that her education and entire luxurious life-style has been financed by her mother's career in the world's oldest profession.

The play was written in 1893 but not performed until 1902 after which it was banned from public performance until 1925. Apparently Shaw wrote the play "to draw attention to the truth that prostitution is caused - not by female depravity or male licentiousness but simply by underpaying, undervaluing and overworking women so shamefully that the poorest of them are forced to resort to prostitution to keep body and soul together".

This ground-breaking drama is full of insight and humane understanding and ranks as one of Shaw's masterpieces.

On With The Show presents:

On With The Show Productions Summer 2019

There's no better way to keep four to 16 year old occupied than getting them involved with a local production.

On With The Show Productions (OWTS) is a two week summer project, at the Pump House, from 29th July to 9th August 9:30am - 3pm ( early sessions available from 8am)

OWTS has more than 16 years experience in performing arts and that experience is used to involve the students in all aspects of putting on a show - the back stage crew, sound and lighting, costume and set-design, directing and script writing through to performing. All the hard work is then presented in two shows on the final day of the project.

The two weeks is all about making friends, learning new skills, working as part of a team and putting on a show to be proud of.

Experience and ability is not necessary as the ethos behind OWTS is to encourage everyone to get fully involved, build confidence and many students discover talents they didn't know they had.

Check out or email: for more information

Dates of project: 29th July - 9th August 2019  9:30am - 3pm ( early drop off available from 8am)

The Pump House Theatre and Arts Centre has been running for over 46 years and there have been so much incredible Art, Music Dance and Drama to ooze out of this old Pumping Station over that time. This year alone we have had over 20,000 people from all ages and backgrounds step over the threshold to either entertain or be entertained. The biggest story however is that all of this is run by volunteers – over 1500 per year which is remarkable. This is truly a community theatre and arts centre and if you were to start this from scratch it would be very hard to recreate this incredible community place.

92% of our income comes from our doors being open, with only 8% coming from funding streams. In this day and age that is pretty remarkable, however with our doors closed then it is hard to generate this income. We have not however been sitting on our laurels. The Pump House and our community have been putting plenty of entertainment to keep you occupied online. Our Children and Youth had an online Cabaret; EUTV was developed by the amazing Electric Umbrella; Jazz has been played online weekly; Ghost stories are being told; Shakespeare Monologue workshops with the incredible Tom Kanji and IsoVision has been set up to help people get over the devastation of the Eurovision being cancelled…or not possibly just for fun. All of this is free for you to access by going to We will be publishing everything we are doing here.

We do however, need your support if possible. To be able to keep our doors open and be here for the future we need some help. Are you able to do a fundraiser for us or are you able to donate? Your support will help us ensure that The Pump House doors remain open for generations to come. Thank you.

Pump House CYT presents:

Dungeness – POSTPONED

*** Sorry this production has been postponed ***

A one act play, part of the National Theatre Connections programme.

Fifty years on from the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England, Chris Thompson wanted to write a play about the struggles and the joy of being gay. In a remote part of the UK, where nothing ever happens, a group of teenagers share a safe house for LGBT+ young people. While their shared home welcomes difference, it can be tricky for self-appointed group leader Birdie to keep the peace.

The group must decide how they want to commemorate an attack that happened to people like them in a country far away. How do you take to the streets and protest if you’re not ready to tell the world who you are? If you’re invisible, does your voice still count? A play about love, commemoration and protest.

isoVision song’ish contest

Watch the show live from 7pm here -

A just for fun, created from isolation, song'ish competition and online show for Watford and the surrounding areas

While the Eurovision song content may not be the first major event you would put in your list of "cancelled events I was looking forwarded to", it is probably the one that would generate silliest, fun entertainment. But now the highly creative people of Watford and surrounding areas do not have to miss out.

isoVision is a very lighthearted competition of short songs or comedy or fun items created by people while in isolation.  It will use the Eurovision format including jovial juries and "completely unbiased" public voting.  We have hosts and our very own Graham Norton stand in, to take us through the show.

When: The show will be streamed live on our Pump House YouTube channel on Saturday 9th May from 7pm.  The pre-recorded entries will be shown, followed by jury votes from each jury representative and finally the public vote will be added to find a "winner" live at the end of the show.  There are no prizes, it is just for fun, but you could gain many local bragging rights.

To enter you need to:

  1. Choose somewhere or some group to represent.  You can choose one of the Eurovision countries, or any country or even a local area or group or organisation or even your road (it does not have to be a country).
  2. Produce a clip between 30 and 60 seconds long.  It can be a part of a song or a funny sketch or spoof.  It does not have to relate to Eurovision but if it can that would be great.  For example you can recreate part of a past iconic Eurovision performance.
  3. Record the people involved in your submission waving and saying something like "Hello we are".  Please keep this to 5 seconds or less.
  4. Upload your video clip (any common format is fine) and information via entry request form before the deadline of Monday 4th May

We are looking for jury representatives as well

If you want to represent a local group or organisation and form a jury (in the same way Eurovision has a jury giving votes from each country) then we want to hear from you.  At some point during the week starting 4th May you will need to view the entries and then a representative will submit a recording of announcing their 12 points (full guidance and instructions will be given).  Contact if you are interested in being a jury.

Tips for recording

To get the best out of your recorded item try the following:

  1. Ensure the recorded subject/person is facing the light source (lamp or window) and there is plenty of light
  2. If using a phone please record in landscape (phone on its side)
  3. Please make sure any sung or spoken words are clearly audible over any backing tracks or music
  4. Please do not use any full names or address or anything else that may identify your exact location to the general public
  5. We hope to have a wide age range of audience so please no bad language or adult content

Pump House LIVE Jazz Club presents:

The Pump House Jazz Club – WATFORD

*** Due to the current Covid-19 outbreak and current advice events cancelled until further notice ***

The Pump House Jazz Club has been a thriving jazz venue in Watford for the part 48 years. Founded in 1972 by Trevor Hodgkinson and Neville Marsh, in the newly acquired buildings that were to become the Pump House Theatre and Arts Centre.

The first bands were alternating each week between Trevor Anthony's Jazz Men and Richard Leach's Northside Jazz band, which formed a great basis to establish traditional jazz in the Watford area.

In the late 1970s the Club was set on a more formal footing with Reg & Margaret Bright booking different bands each week. A typical month saw Ken Sims All Stars, Trevor Anthony Jazz Men, Northside Jazz Band, Monty Sunshine and Main Avenue Jazz Band.

Since those heady smoky nights, the Pump House Jazz Club is still thriving - in fact it is becoming the Preservation Hall of Hertfordshire & London attracting the top jazz bands on the circuit. Recently the Club has updated the facilities for audiences and bands with LED controlled lighting and a professional sound system.

We are pleased that a more diverse programme is attracting a younger audience (under 50!) who are enjoying the varied styles of Jazz, not to mention a well-stocked bar selling real ales, a selection of filled rolls made on the day and a fun raffle.

Do come and visit the Club you will be given a warm welcome and enjoy bands from UK, Europe and USA. With n entry price (a donation) of £10, it's not only excellent value for money, but a great night out as well.

If you cannot find space within The Pump House Car Park, there are several alternatives within walking distance, but be aware of their time limits !

The Watford Folk Club is the friendliest Folk Club in Watford. There has been a Folk Club at The Pump House since 1973 and the present club was founded in 2008 and is a run by a committee and willing volunteers, all of whom are passionate about Folk Music.
The Watford Folk Club has an enviable reputation for the quality and the quantity of its floor singers/players and for headlining new and established Folk performers.

At Singarounds, chairs are arranged in a circle and anyone can sing a song or two or play a piece or two. People also come to the club just to listen to the high-quality music. There is never any obligation to perform! Spotlight Singarounds feature two 20-minute sets at a Singaround from local supporters of the club. Songwriters Circles feature three local songwriters, discussing what inspires their writing and their individual songwriting process, plus performances of their songs.
Admission is by suggested minimum and varies from £5 (at Singarounds & Spotlights) to £7-£15 (at Guest nights).

There is a real ale bar, great acoustics and a friendly welcome every week.
We’re really pleased with our lineup for this year, featuring not only major folk artists but also amazing local talent. Members of the club are active on the folk scene and can often be found performing at local and national festivals and events. We also play at fundraising events for charity.

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

“How does anything come to be? I mean to say: really, and truly, begin?”

Henry Jekyll is a doctor and a man of God. Respectable. Upstanding. The child born on the Sabbath Day. So why does he long for the darkness? And isn’t that… blood on his cuff?

Adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic short story, ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ is a timely meditation on the evil that men do in pursuit of all that they can be…

“I dare say you’ll think me mad. Indeed, perhaps that is so…”

Dillie Keane – Love and other bad ideas

DILLIE KEANE - new solo show

Love And Other Bad Ideas

“A rare performer who can produce sharp, piercing satire and deliver heartbreaking songs with élan.”  Huffington Post * * * * *

After far too much bloody gardening leave (thank you Covid!), Dillie is back where she belongs - on a cabaret stage, accompanied by the marvellous Michael Roulston.  Her take on life, love and government is cheerfully sour, gently savage and peculiarly mordant - but the beautiful music softens the effect.  She freely admits she has a voice like a dying crow being crushed beneath an angry sheep, but that’s never stopped her.  In fact, she will be singing some perfectly wonderful songs by other songwriters which she recently discovered in New York.  As well as a raft of her own songs too, of course.  A delightful evening.

Dillie Keane is best known as one third of the satirical trio, Fascinating Aïda.   She has also done a fair bit of legitimate theatre:  nominated for Best Actress in the Manchester Evening News for playing Maggie in DANCING AT LUGHNASA.  In 2018, she appeared at the Watermill as Madame Armfeld in Paul Foster’s production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, since when she has performed her solo show HELLO DILLIE all over the UK, at the Adelaide Comedy festival and in New York’s prestigious 59e59 Theatre, where she received her fourth nomination for a Drama Desk Award.

Dillie is currently pondering an update of the recent Fascinating Aïda show which started out with a three week run over Christmas 2019 and New Year at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London’s South Bank.  It was then followed by a stonking sell-out national tour that was sadly cut short by you-know-what.  Three times nominated for an Olivier Award and three times nominated for a New York Drama Desk Award, the three of them are champing at the bit to get back on the road.

A recording of that show will soon be available on the usual channels.

“Exudes faded glamour, a bit like Brighton Sea Front.”  Daily Mail * * * * *

“The wonderful Dillie Keane wears her genius lightly.”  Onstage * * * *

“Life, love and the songwriting process are celebrated in this richly layered cabaret.”  The Stage * * * *

“Her world view is laconic, her lyrics lacerating, her voice now capable of going deeper than a Chilean miner.”  The Telegraph * * * * *
